  • Security is a critical issue today. Yet for all the talk of dark ops, shadow ops and more, most data leaks occur because of poor access and sharing controls.

  • Microsoft today announced that its chat-based workspace, Teams, is now available to Office 365 business customers.

  • Modern cloud-based collaboration technologies have significantly changed the pace and dynamic of work across organizations of all sizes and verticals. Microsoft has continued to lead the charge in this arena with the continued growth and expansion of Office 365. Much of Microsoft's innovation in the past year has revolved around Office 365 Groups, including the launch of Microsoft Teams last year to compete in the chat-based collaboration space. With Office 365 Groups, Microsoft caters to the evolving workforce by providing end users an easier way to create and collaborate on projects together.

  • SP Marketplace (www.spmarketplace.com), the leader in Office 365 business portals and applications, has released SP Digital Workplace Solutions, a next generation collection of Operational Portals and business applications that transform Office 365 into a unified Digital Workplace for employees to work more effectively.

  • Okay, maybe that title is a bit of a stretch, but I wanted to make sure I got your attention. So many people skip over how important PowerShell is to their success, and I didn't want that to be you. Keep reading, and I will give you some concrete examples of how you can benefit from PowerShell and all of the resources you need to learn more.

  • Earlier this month, an article in SPTechReport noted that a survey was being done to assess where people are in terms of working on-premises, in the cloud, or both.

  • Studying hybrid SharePoint

    David Rubinstein

As Microsoft continues to push Office 365 and SharePoint Online as the future of workplace collaboration, some companies remain firmly entrenched on-premises, while others face daunting technical challenges in a move to the cloud.

  • My favorite things

    Stephanie Donahue
It's hard to get anything accomplished as you roll out Office 365 if you don't have the proper tools to get the job done. Unfortunately, we don't all have the budget to purchase every piece of software that would meet our needs. As power users and site administrators, we are often asked to do more with less, and that's where these third-party tools come in! I've spent years working for and with companies on a limited budget, so here are a few of my favorite things.

    Wunderlist
Are you having trouble keeping track of your tasks? Using e-mail like a to-do list? Post-it notes everywhere? Wunderlist is the application that might be the answer to your problems. Wunderlist is a cloud-based task-management system that allows you to easily create multiple to-do lists from any device. While it doesn't directly integrate with SharePoint, you can connect Wunderlist to Microsoft Office Groups and Teams so update notifications will populate the conversation streams. It's the perfect easy-to-use product when you don't need an elaborate task list in Microsoft Project or when you need a mobile-friendly app.

  • Last week I had the honor of being a judge at the Arctic SharePoint Challenge in Oslo, Norway. This is an annual challenge put on by a group of SharePoint-focused consulting companies in and around Oslo, though occasionally teams come from further afield.

  • It continues to be an exciting time for SharePoint developers, especially with the seemingly inevitable task of moving our organizations to the cloud. A popular feature of on-premises SharePoint has been the ability to register event receivers-that being the ability to have SharePoint notify our custom processes when an action occurred. With SharePoint Online, this has been much more difficult, but with the recent release of SharePoint webhooks, we now have Microsoft's answer to our concerns.

  • It's still early enough in 2017 that we can talk about new year's resolutions. I think most of us already put a lot of pressure on ourselves, so I'm keeping my personal resolutions to a minimum. However, I'd like to suggest a resolution for your intranet pages that should not be too difficult and will dramatically help usability of your content pages: Eliminate all instances of "click here.?

  • It's a new year for Office 365. Microsoft has announced updates and new features for its OneDrive, Office apps and StaffHub solutions.

  • Microsoft is making it easier to sync, share and collaborate in Office 365 with new updates to its OneDrive for Business solution. OneDrive for Business gives users a place to store, share and sync work. New features include syncing files anywhere at any time, easily sharing files in and outside the organization, and improving the IT admin management experience.

Microsoft wants to help businesses gain value with the Microsoft Cloud. The company announced it is moving its "customer success service? FastTrack beyond Office 365. It previewed FastTrack for Windows 10 and FastTrack for Dynamics 365, as well as updates to FastTrack for Office 365. FastTrack provides users with best practices, tools, resources and expert support for working with Microsoft Cloud.

  • As companies settle back into the swing of things in this new year, collaborative teams will look to create meaningful strategic plans to guide their actions for 2017. If this sounds good to you because this is what your company is doing, I applaud you. If these words were read with a snicker and perhaps confusion over why your company is not following this path, I'm certain you are not alone. Please read on for three areas to focus on that must be accounted for in your strategy.

  • Now that we've talked about metadata, we can get into the next step, which is one of the best features SharePoint has to offer: views.

  • SharePoint Client Browser wants to help users speed up their SharePoint development. The solution was recently updated with new fixes and features aimed at making remote SharePoint development and SharePoint apps easier.

  • One of the biggest advantages of cloud services is the pace at which new features are delivered and adopted. Microsoft has readily embraced the rapid release cycles made possible by their robust cloud infrastructure, releasing new and updated features for SharePoint Online and other Office 365 services on a monthly (and sometimes weekly) basis. While having immediate access to the latest and greatest functionality is a definite improvement over the old three- to five-year upgrade cycles for on-premises software, it creates some significant challenges for corporate training departments.

  • Those of you anticipating the ability to sync SharePoint documents and libraries to OneDrive will have to wait just a bit longer. After promising general release of the capability by the end of 2016, Microsoft now says it should be available some time in January.

  • Over the past couple months, I have been thinking a lot about adoption metrics around SharePoint and Office 365, and wanted to share some thoughts about the Office 365 Adoption Content Pack for PowerBI that was announced at Microsoft Ignite 2016 in Atlanta. Specifically, what it delivers and what it still lacks, and why every enterprise should be thinking about adoption and engagement metrics, in general.

  • Making OneDrive easier

    David Rubinstein

Microsoft today rolled out a preview of a new OneDrive Admin Center, aimed at making it easier to manage company settings and policies. It's for First Release customers, and Microsoft is anxious to hear what you have to say about it.

  • Germany-based Rencore this week announced SPTransformator, a tool for cloud migration of customizations such as sandbox and forms solutions, at SPTechCon San Francisco.

  • SharePoint began as a portal solution that enabled collaboration within organizations. Now, 15 years later, SharePoint is a portal and collaboration solution infused with intelligence.

  • SPTechCon in 2017

    David Rubinstein

As the weather turns cold and thoughts already turn to the New Year, we're pleased to announce our SPTechCon schedule for 2017.

  • Hopefully by now you have fully embraced PowerShell as part of your SharePoint life. Why? Because it is magical no matter what your role is:

  • Ramp, the leading provider of next-generation SharePoint video management and eCDN video delivery solutions for large enterprises, today announced a technology and marketing partnership with Syrinx Consulting Corporation, whose software solutions keep pace with the changing state of business and technology.

  • One of the most powerful features in SharePoint is metadata. If you've ever attended a SharePoint conference or gone through expert-led SharePoint training, you've probably heard this term come up a number of times, though it's likely you walked away confused or wondering exactly how you apply this super tool in an everyday way that would make your life easier.

  • The impact of community

    Christian Buckley

    1108.sp-community.png

When I left Microsoft back in 2009 and joined a small SharePoint ISV in downtown Seattle, the SharePoint community was already a fast-growing, thriving phenomenon. One comment that I have heard again and again from people is that they've never seen anything like it.

  • 1102.sp-microsoft.png

Microsoft officially confirmed today that it is building its own chat and messaging service in-house. Microsoft Teams is a chat-based solution for Office 365.

  • Every few years, folks who work with SharePoint wrangle with the issue of community. The most recent go-round was likely sparked by a Facebook post from Microsoft's Dan Holme, who also happened to start a SharePoint community website called IT Unity prior to joining Microsoft. Je said that a higher-up at Microsoft thought it would be a good idea to build a community around SharePoint. Meanwhile, Mark Miller, who created and curated endusersharepoint.com and nothingbutsharepoint.com, chimed in with a great comment, to the effect of "What a great idea! I'll get right on that 10 years ago!?

  • Microsoft is giving Android users the ability to take SharePoint with them on the go. The Microsoft SharePoint app is now available on Google Play.

  • Microsoft is moving away from code-based sandbox solutions. The company already depreciated them in SharePoint 2013 and SharePoint Online in January 2014, and now it wants to help customers prepare for their removal in other solutions. According to the company, users could only execute sandbox solutions they know and trust. The company announced the Manage Solutions Gallery for SharePoint Server 2010, 2013 and 2016. The new gallery aims provide a list of known and trusted code-based sandbox solutions.

  • Twenty years ago, collaboration was considered to be a discussion with a colleague or a group review of a document. In recent years our collaborative needs have changed, expediency is demanded, and collaboration through technology is expected. Without question, day in and day out, we all demand our technologies provide us the best experience in order to collaborate among friends, family and colleagues.

  • According to Merriam-Webster, a trend is defined as following a general course or to veer in a new direction. Based on the way Microsoft is deploying rapid updates to us in Office 365, I would say a new direction is the only direction you can take when it comes to engaging your users during an Office 365 rollout. Upgrading, migrating or just deploying SharePoint is a whole new ballgame now, not to mention all of the other Office 365 applications you need to keep in mind.

  • The proposition in the headline almost seems like an oxymoron, but it is a real option. Today many companies are in a race to the cloud in order to get out of the data-center business. And while Office 365 is a great long-term solution, the investment many companies have already made in SharePoint is too great to just "start over? in Office 365. The truth is while software-as-a-service (SaaS) is the best solution to future-proof things, it does take an investment to get there.

  • Metalogix, the market-leading provider of solutions to move, manage and protect content within enterprise collaboration platforms, today announced the winners of its third annual MetaHero Awards.  The awards recognize the individuals and teams, leveraging Metalogix solutions together with Microsoft SharePoint and/or Office 365 cloud, to help ensure their organization's agility, competitive advantage and business success.

  • First off, let me be very clear about a few things: I don't have any special knowledge here (probably, even though I'm a SharePoint MVP) and I'm probably making a few things up. But recently I've been thinking about where the future of SharePoint development lies, and I've connected some dots in my head.\

  • K2 Software today announced new capabilities for K2 Mobile, K2 management, K2 Rest Service and Microsoft SharePoint 2016. These updates are available both on- premises via blackpearl 4.7 and in the cloud via Appit.

K2 delivers value for customers with business process application management efficiency gains of over $750,000 for a composite organization based on customer interviews according to a recent commissioned Total Economic Impact? (TEI) study conducted by Forrester Consulting. Using K2 blackpearl as its enterprise business process application standard, the organization consolidated and centralized its business processes onto a single, holistic tool, improving its efficiency in supporting, managing, optimizing and troubleshooting its business process-oriented applications. Additional benefits can be found in the complete Forrester TEI study here.

Here's how K2's latest release delivers value for customers:

    K2 Mobile
K2 continues to increase investments in its mobile platform. New features for K2 Mobile for iOS help customers remain productive while on the go with the following new enhancements:

    • Barcode controls enable organizations to digitally transform their business processes by leveraging K2 Mobile. For example, customers can scan a UPC or SKU to prepopulate information on a K2 form, making it easy to capture data for inventory management, asset tracking or incident management.
    • Image annotation lets users mark up and add notes to images and attach them to forms for further explanation when using the K2 Mobile App, thus improving the quality of information shared and ultimately speeding up resolutions.

Proactive diagnosis before deploying SmartForms and views
K2 improves Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) by providing proactive, real-time impact analysis on changes made to SmartForms and views during the design stage, all without any architectural changes or coding. ALM provides visual indicators to inform you that you are missing required data fields, controls, control properties and rules. Notifications provide the option to keep or remove dependencies as you see fit. ALM also analyzes dependencies on check-in, and allows for correction or cloning to avoid errors in deployment.

    K2 Management
K2 Management offers a centralized, intuitive user interface for configuring and managing of an organization's K2-based applications. Administrators can centrally manage all the workflows, methods, user rights, security, roles, worklists, authorization settings and more. K2 Management also allows administrators the ability to view, run and test SmartObjects quickly and easily, as well as identify process errors and repair those errors with ease. Lastly, administrators can manage their users' ongoing tasks and schedule workflow processes.

K2 REST Service now available for blackpearl
A short time ago we shared updates for Appit, including support for REST. The new K2 REST broker with Swagger support makes integration with net new or legacy systems easy. REST is now available for blackpearl on-premises customers as well. To find out more about how customers are using REST, please see the following case study.

    Microsoft SharePoint 2016
K2 now supports SharePoint 2016 and adds key enhancements to performance, forms rules, modern SharePoint lists and registering web applications, which dramatically simplify the application registration and activation management for the K2 app.

"K2's low code apps platform allows SharePoint users to build process apps in both cloud and on-premises environments without coding," said Rob Howard, director of Office Ecosystem, Microsoft Corp.  "K2's deeply integrated, reusable workflows reinforce SharePoint as a one-stop-shop for intelligent collaboration from any device."

  • Metalogix, a provider of unified software, announced the finalists of the third annual MetaHero Awards, which recognizes leaders of innovation with Microsoft SharePoint and Office 365 deployments. The winners will be announced during the Microsoft Ignite conference next week.

  • With the introduction of the SharePoint Framework, organizations now have an entirely new option to choose from when designing custom extensions for their cloud and on-premise collaboration solutions. Although this new model provides additional capabilities and addresses many of the feature gaps present in Azure Web Applications and SharePoint Add-Ins, it also makes the development landscape more complicated than ever before, inevitably leading to confusion around which model to use for specific business scenarios. Integrating the Framework into an existing development strategy involves several key decision points and a deeper understanding of why it was introduced and what specific problems it was created to solve.

  • The biggest challenge with the adoption of new technologies is that adoption requires change. And change is hard-even if it's a good change. If you want to make change (and thus adoption) a little easier, here are some ideas that can help:
